Effective September 2015, the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR) has taken over the regulation of online adult driver education, teen drivers education and defensive driving courses.  The previous agency was the Texas Education Agency (TEA), which is no longer involved in the regulation of online driver safety courses.  However, the TDLR has a lot of experience in the area of regulating similar courses including the regulation of electricians, cosmetologists, tow truck and large truck operators, and even air conditioning installers.  In its new role, the TDLR will oversee the approval of new online driver safety course providers in Texas.  This includes both traditional classrooms and alternative method (online) courses.

The online courses include:

  • Online Driver’s Education for Adults
  • Parent-Taught Driver’s Education for Teens
  • Online Driver’s Education for Teens
  • Online Defensive Driving
  • Online Seat Belt Safety Course

So if you’re looking for a licensed driver safety course, make sure that it is TDLR approved!
